Program Descriptions

Creative Movement

Creative Movement is a program aimed at pre school-aged students taking their very first steps in a dance class. Students learn general classroom skills and work on their basic and fine motor skills in an energetic and imaginative environment. Focus is on creativity and imagination, participation, ability to understand and follow instructions, and fostering an early love and appreciation of movement.

Class attire : Comfortable active wear, dance shorts or leggings, ballet or gym slippers (or similar).

Ballet

Ballet is a fundamental dance style emphasizing long and strong movements and lines while keeping poise and grace in motion. As a program, Ballet works to provide proper posture and alignment throughout all movements, beginning from the most basic and progressing to more advanced turns and jumps. Conditioning is offered as a complement to other dance disciplines. Using Ballet as a base, the conditioning program provides exercises emphasising the training of specific muscle groups to enhance control and technique.

Class attire : Plain bodysuit and pink tights, pink ballet slippers (leather or canvas), plain wrap skirt optional -OR- fitted or semi-fitted plain white or black t-shirt, dark shorts (similar to bike shorts preferred), plain socks and white or black ballet slippers (leather or canvas)

Jazz

Jazz is a high-energy dance style filled with jumps and turns. Jazz dance movements become highly stylized depending on the era of focus (1920's cabaret, 1950's sock hop, 2000's MTV etc) and the soundtrack to the class is Top 40 hits. Quick rhythms and changes of direction are key skills in a jazz class.

Class attire : Plain bodysuit and black tights, slip-on jazz shoes (black preferred) OR black fitted Tshirt and shorts with slip-on jazz shoes.

Highland Dance

Highland is a traditional Scottish dance form requiring strength, endurance and grace. The use of a rich variety of Celtic music, including bagpipes and fiddle, helps to make practice fun. Students learn the many Highland and National dances including the Fling and Sword Dance. Classes also include a choreographic component based on the traditional movements and technique. Dancers can pursue competition, examinations, performances, or simply enjoy dancing recreationally.

Class attire : Shorts (above the knee), fitted or semi-fitted tank top or t-shirt, plain socks (white preferred), black dance slippers (highland ghillies, or gym slippers for primary dancers)

Pilates

According to Wikipedia, Pilates is a type of mind-body exercise developed in the early 20th century by German physical trainer Joseph Pilates, after whom it was named. Pilates called his method "Contrology". It is practiced worldwide, especially in countries such as Australia, Canada, South Korea, the United States and the United Kingdom. As of 2005, there were 11 million people practicing the discipline regularly and 14,000 instructors in the United States. At Brocadie, Pilates is an option for our dancers that want something different or lower impact than some of our other classes.

Class attire/equipment : Comfortable active wear, Tank top and leggings or shorts. Yoga mat. No shoes required.
